I really enjoyed the character development (again - she is a great author), but like some of the other comments, the change back and forth in time was a little hard to keep straight

I am ambivalent about this book. In the beginning I felt I liked it and then I wondered where it was going. When it came to the present I was thoroughly confused. Finally when the past and present were tied together I got engrossed in the book. I'm not sure I'd have behaved like Liv but well she's Moyes's character and it's the authors prerogative to create a character in any mold she chooses. The tale has enough twists and turns to keep the reader engrossed but I'll have to say this is not one of JoJo Moyes's better works.

Not sure I would have behaved like the main character but it was a good way to learn about history

Good story but seems a bit contrived.

This was just 'ok' for me. Not my typical genre, but definitely a good story. I enjoy Moyes novels nonetheless.

This is a different Moyes than I'm used to but still a great and entertaining read with a serious topic to explore and great narrators to tackle it.

Really good story. I find these books hard to put down, easy to read.

JoJo Moyers delivers another heart warming novel. I have done extensive study on WWII lost and stolen art and this setting provided a wonderful story line Characters were touching and her ability to shift from one century to another was skillful. Very enjoyable.

Immediately got totally absorbed in this book and then came part two and it started to fall apart. But it picked up the pace again. A couple of spots near the end again I lost my interest but had come so far that I knew I'd finish it. Overall I enjoyed the story but not as much as the previous two books by Moyes that I have read

This one took me awhile to get into as I wasn't as interested in the "past" as I was in the "present" - probably the opposite of most people, but that's how it was for me. The last 1/3 of the book flew by though and I ended up enjoying it!

I couldn't decide how I felt about this story, the whole way through. It seemed like the book couldn't quite decide if it was 'serious historical novel' or cliched chick-lit. At times I couldn't put it down because I was so immersed in the plot (with its many twists), other times I couldn't wait for it to be over. I did enjoy reading a new take on the war narrative - art restitution continues to make news today... but she lost me sometimes with the characters' unrealistic behaviour and overly descriptive romantic musings. I doubt I will recommend this one.

Reminds "The Notebook". Although the place and time are completely different. But - on the mood of the book.
In my view, the second part, which tells about the litigation - protracted. At times it becomes boring to read, especially when the author uses dialogues and actions that has repeatedly met in so many other works of different authors in these kind of stories.

I would like to add something, after reading some comments before mine.
In many of those comment you can see words: Nazi occupation of France during the World War I. The more accurate would be to say - "under German occupation." instead of "Nazi occupation" as many are putting in their comments. It is not correct.

Péronne For almost the whole of the war, the town of Péronne was occupied by German troops. It was finally liberated on the 2nd September 1918 by Australian troops. Life under German rule deeply affected the inhabitants of Péronne and the town suffered heavily with bombardments, fire and destruction. Between 1914 and 1918, almost 30% of the town’s inhabitants became civilian victims of the war! Everyday, the bells of the Town Hall ring out “La Madelon”, a popular French song from the Great War. - See more at: http://www.somme-battlefields.com/memory-place/peronne-historial-museum-great-war#sthash.JaPrp5uB.dpuf

Тhe Nazi Party was a political party in Germany active between 1920 and 1945 that practised Nazism.

Delightful. The past and present worked well. The wartime sequences were particularly poignant and evocative. The mystery was well sustained.

With some books you get a character driven novel, others the plot. I find with Moyes they compliment each other to bring a rich story to the reader. My third book by her: Ship of Brides, Me Before You and this title. Loved all three.

Have now read two books by Jo Jo Moyes and I want to read more. Both stories were easy to read and involved interesting characters.

A story in two parts that revolves around a painting.
1. In the past: A German officer admires a painting in a French house where he and other officers take their meals.
2. In the present: A lawyer accidentally locates a missing painting through a magazine article that shows the artwork hanging on a wall.
The "past" portion of the book was by far the strongest but it was interesting to see the providence of the painting.

A mystery whose details I did not see coming; a history I was unaware of -- WW I had Nazi occupation that was brutal and "resistant camps" -- and a story of a painting and the many homes in which it hung. This was a very satisfying book.

The first part of the book was compelling and well written. When the story jumps to the present, the characters were unrealistic, unlikable and it was poorly written and needed to be edited!

This is the most intriguing and wonderful book I've read in a long time. It has everything...... war, hardship, love, enemies, intrigue, etc. I don't give 5 Stars lightly but this book definitely deserved one! It's not 'fluff' but it's not too heavy either. Enjoy!

Found it very hard to put this book down. Two stories within a story, both very intriguing. It is now one of my favourites, and can't wait to read more by Jojo

Here is another enjoyable story by the author of Me Before You. One story line takes place during WWI and another takes place in current time. The two stories are connected by a famous painting and by two women who are desperate to hang onto what is most precious to them. I would recommend this book to those that love a good story about human struggle and challenge.

This book is fantastic. It weaves mystery, romance and tragedy keeping the reader intrigued the whole time. 5 stars all the way!
