This is a rather tame version of Oscar Wilde's masterpiece. Far better and more enjoyable is the 1950s version with a great cast (Michael Redgrave, Margaret Rutherford, Edith Evans, the divine Joan Greenwood, etc etc all in top form).…

Comedy by Oscar Wilde. I like several of the actors.

Entertaining, fluffy comedy about mistaken identities based on the play by Oscar Wilde. There is not much substance to it but there are lots of witty lines and pretty people to look at. I enjoyed it.

This movie was very boring in my opinion, maybe that's just because I'm a kid.

Likeable, eye-candy adaptation of Wilde's famous theater play that satirizes high society. High-caliber actors like Judi Dench and Colin Firth. Because it was written as a play, there's a mechanical element to it and some asides that don't…

I've seen the play a few times, and found this film version to be awful. For some reason most of the actors play it straight, when it's best done with a bit of a wink and a drawl. See the version with Michael Redgrave instead!

I agree that this film isn't historically accurate. But I think it stays true to Wilde's original intention. Getting hung up on costume and historical accuracy misses the entire point--making fun of our social conventions. Just as with…

The Importance of Being Earnest is one of the theater's most recognized and notable stories. Oliver Parker's film adaptation is not bad, but it doesn't have quite the same effect. Firth, Witherspoon, Dench, and the whole bunch are great,…

very funny. i don't think this movie really accurate in historic sense. but you become so enchanted by actors play, catchy phrases and smooth flow of action - you can't get enough of it. one of my favorite movies ever

This version loses its historical sense too often. The changes the director makes to update the play weakens the overall film. Was it really necessary to have a proper Victorian woman get a tattoo? Or for that same woman to drive a car…

A very good adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play both satirical and funny. The acting is very good.
