Director Georges Franju plays this wickedly camp horror story completely straight making you feel the doctor’s burden of guilt and Christiane’s growing sense of anguish as all attempts to make her “normal” again end in disaster. Beautifully staged with shadows and staircases evoking more pathos than tension and a poignant musical score which underlines the film’s overall sense of sadness and loss. As an aside the rather intense surgical scenes, shocking for 1960, threw European censors into a tizzy and reportedly had people fainting in the aisles at its Edinburgh premiere.

*SPECIAL NOTE* - There are 2 films on this DVD. One is the main feature, 1960's Eyes Without A Face. The other is a 22-minute documentary, 1949's Blood Of The Beasts.

Both of these films were directed by French film-maker, Georges Franju. Had Blood Of The Beasts not been on this disc, then I would've only rated the feature film with 2.5 stars.

The best that I can say about Eyes Without A Face is that it's an "OK" mad scientist movie. But, with that said, it did contain some genuinely creepy moments. And when Dr. Genessier proceeds to surgically cut off a young woman's face, the viewer is sure to feel a bit queasy.

But, on the other hand, Blood Of The Beasts will shock you right out of your socks with its graphically brutal look at slaughterhouses. This documentary's super-gory, in-your-face imagery leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination.

In all of my days, I've never seen such a horrific film as this one before. It's hard to imagine that both men & women, alike, have chosen to do this sort of beastly work on a day-to-day basis.

P.S. - Have a barf-bag ready when you watch Blood Of The Beasts!
