Pure cinematic poetry – everything you need to know about Poetic Realism is right here. Marcel Carne and Jacques Prevert hit on a very specific tone and atmosphere with their best work (this, Le jour se leve, Les visiteurs du soir); romance, tragedy, grit, toughness, sensitivity, existentialism, fatalism, transience all intertwined. There is nothing else like it.

A romantic and atmospheric French film from 1938, this is often held up as an excellent example of the seemingly paradoxical subgenre of poetic realism, but to modern eyes it looks like a blueprint for film noir. The iconic Jean Gabin (the Gallic Bogart) plays a laconic army deserter who shows up in the port city of Le Havre and falls in with a shady shop owner, his lovely goddaughter and some low life criminals. Michel Simon (the star of Renoir's "Boudo Saved from Drowning") is both amiable and menacing as the shop owner and teenage Michele Morgan will entrance you with her eyes. I think Godard must've seen this and borrowed the ending for "Breathless." Another Gabin film worth checking out: "Pepe le Moko."
