This documentary features a filmmaker who plumbed the depths of the human psyche. Cassavetes...a man unafraid to tackle subjects such as human weaknesses and vulnerability, human multiplicity, and ambiguity. This work is a solid, insightful look at the life of, but more so, the work of John Cassavetes. Footage of Cassavetes and his films are interspersed with musings from co-workers such as Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, Gena Rowlands, and Seymour Cassel. They discuss how he pushed their limits and what they experienced while working for him. This film honors his hard-working ethic and his daring film contributions. It honors a disciple of spontaneity as well as a man driven by his limitations. It's a lot to absorb, but it's time well spent.
