An unusual and captivating film with phenomenal cinematography (and acting). Something that I had not noticed on previous viewings was that a central theme of the film, which was set in the 1840's, was science vs. mysticism -- with the two fighting each other to an apparent draw, and the adherents of neither being particularly admirable.

I have to say this earlier Bergman film is not one of his better works. But, shot in B&W, it is still a Bergman film and hence worth watching.

Perhaps The Magician is my favorite early Bergman. It is at once creepy and funny, intellectual and bawdy, and always beautifully shot. Overlying all of this is a serious consideration of what reality is and where limits are or should be placed.

One of Bergman's stronger films, this is another story of the artist's conflict with society and its norms. Max von Sydow and Ingrid Thulin are excellent.
