The author must have had a deal to be paid by the number of words she could produce. It's a very thin plot. Everything (especially what the character was thinking or feeling) was described in excruciatingly useless detail. I listened to the audiobook and just pressed "fast forward" to the next chapter after listening to a couple of sentences hoping that the story would actually move along. Never finished it.

When I first started to listen to the book, I enjoyed the immaculate detail with which Harbison depicted the adolescence of her heroine Erin. When the author moves ahead to more or less the present day, the potentially likeable Erin of the 80s has developed into a smug, critical and not very interesting party-planner. I had intended to continue the book, but didn't make it through the next time warp back to 1985. Young Erin's obsessive adulation of her boyfriend (admittedly typical of someone her age) began to make my skin crawl; I just didn't like her enough to continue. I freely admit that others may have a more tolerant response.

I listened to this book in audio in the car traveling back and forth to work. I literally could wait to commute. Fantastic book!
