Volume is indexed by Thomson Reuters CPCI-S (WoS).This collection is the result of bringing together scientists from various countries in order to combine their knowledge concerning the latest analytical, experimental and numerical developments in the fields of Strength of Materials, Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue. The contributions are divided into: Metallic Materials, Composite Materials, Construction and Building Materials and Bio-Materials.The work therefore constitutes an authoritative and up-to-date guide to these subject-areas. The Strength of Materials Laboratory at Politehnica University in Timisoara was opened in 1923 in the presence of King Ferdinand of Romania. A conference was held there in November 2008 to celebrate its 85th anniversary, and of the papers presented, 26 were selected and peer reviewed for this volume. Covering metallic, composite, construction and building, and biological materials, they provide technical treatments of such topics as constraint parameters for a longitudinal surface notch in a pipe submitted to internal pressure, the multiscale modeling of damage processes in polycrystalline ceramic porous composites, the influence of cracks on the service life of concrete structures in a marine environment, and the biomechanical three-dimensional analysis of stress induced by orthodontic implants. A paper on fracture mechanics and non-destructive testing for structural integrity assessment contains timely descriptions of how the technique could be used to monitor bridges while they are in service.
