Young policeman Peter Grant's biggest worry used to be where he'd be assigned once he made constable. But one night, he sees a ghost and everything changes. Suddenly he's part of a special division handling supernatural crimes, learning how to cast spells and getting introduced to a world of gods and monsters. His first cases - tracking a malicious spirit that forces people to commit gruesome crimes, and trying to make peace between two rival factions of river gods. The characters are likeable, the plot is fast-moving and the setting is interesting, but some pacing troubles keep this from being a four or five. At some points the mystery just stalls out, and all the tension just disappears. Still, a great opening - I'll certainly look into the other books in the series.

The Rivers of London series is great fun and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith's performance is consistently excellent throughout all the audiobook versions.
