An amusing portrait of a working-class family in a suburb just north of London, an irrepressible mum and dad and their night-and-day twins, a bookish good girl and a sneering layabout. A vivid, lived-in story of ordinary existence, in which even modest dreams (such as the father's desire to open a food truck) carry enormous weight. Perched on the line between humor and melancholy.

Funny parts outweighed by one of the worst scripts ever.
This is not in the same league as Fawlty Towers or even Benny Hill.
Dumb, with a capital "D".

Another wonderful slice-of-life from Mike Leigh. Well acted and humourous.

Sweet enough, and some wit and laughs, but a revisit doesn't really show it up as a classic.

Never did understand what this movie was all about. Therefore could not appreciate it in any way. The only thought after viewing it was - this was a real waste of time. One wonders what the motivation was to make this film and how much money was wasted in its production and distribution.

In the extra (see quotes), director Mike Leigh said this 1990 odd-ball family drama was his least favorite. (Rotten Tomatoes rated it 100%). Personally I prefer "The Snapper" which was more fun and just as odd but with less far-fetched characters.

What soured Mike Leigh on Life Is Sweet? Earlier this year the British writer-director recorded a commentary for the Criterion Collection DVD of his 1990 drama, and at the very end, as the credits are about to roll, he admits that it's his least favorite of the films he's made.

Mom Wendy tells Nicola of the struggle she and Andy endured to care for their baby daughters – how it meant she never went to college and Andy working in a job he hates:
Nic: It says to me there is a man who is getting greedy."
Wen: Greedy, your dad? He is the most unselfish man I ever met. He gets up every day 6 O'clock in the morning ... goes to a job which he hates ...
Nic: I am not prepared to be exploited.
Wen: Exploited? You are not ready to work. Full stop.
