I love Mallory but unless O'Connell moves the characters forward soon, I'm not sure I'll keep reading... I've no way to figure out how much time has passed from the first Mallory to this one but it seems Mallory hasn't grown at all... lots of allusions to her deeper character but we never get any real insight into it... the last two books' endings insinuated something but so far there's been no follow-up... after 10 books, it's time!

What's happening to my favourite authors? First Elizabeth George lets me down and now it's O'Connell. Couldn't summon up enough interest to read beyond first couple of chapters. Skipped to end and was still underwhelmed. Almost seemed like someone else had written it, so different was the tone. If the latest Quintin Jardine continues the trend, I may have to seek treatment - or resort to non-fiction.

I rarely give 1, or even 2 star, reviews -- but I simply cannot believe how awful, awful, awful this book was, especially following THE CHALK GIRL. Mallory was a horrible caricature of herself in this book, and the writing stuttered. Completely unenjoyable.

I was disappointed with this book. I've been following the Mallory series since the beginning, as well as reading Ms. O'Connell's stand alones, and I've never had to say that before.

"It Happens In the Dark" is almost a parody of a Mallory novel, with over the top scenes like the dancing cops. Mallory herself seems almost peripheral to the action; there is more talk about her than action by her.

I will read the next book by Carol O'Connell, hoping for a return to her excellent writing.
