An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, this film stars Alain Delon as Tom Ripley, a duplicitous American charmer in Rome on a mission to bring his privileged acquaintance Philippe Greenleaf back to the United States; what initially seems a carefree tale of friendship soon morphs into a thrilling saga of seduction, identity theft, and murder.

He slithers smoothly into another man's skin, gaining access to his wealth and his woman. No inconvenient person is left to expose him. In this version he does not, however, evade discovery and retribution.

Adapted from Patricia Highsmith's "The Talented Mr. Ripley," this movie is tense and beautiful to watch. Too bad the French were so moralistic about criminals during this time. Alain Delon as Ripley in consecutive movies would have been great.

Fabulous movie by Rene Clement with diabolical plot by Patricia Highsmith, Alain Delon at his super best, joins the upper echelon of the yacht tales of the rich and infamous, e.g., "Knife in the Water," and "L'Aventura."
