It's been decades since I read and loved Practical Magic...and honestly don't remember the story very well. Because of this I was hesitant to pick up the prequel, but I loved this Salem-Witch-Trials era read...and will be reapproaching the entire series in order to be ready for the final installment which will be published in October 2021!

I love the story of the Owens family, and this is my favorite novel yet. I've always wondered about her story and am so glad it was finally written! If you love historical fiction, witches, and stories about magic and the power love, this book is for you.

There's nothing sweeter and more pleasurable than the Storytelling of Alice Hoffman. She is brilliantly deft at weaving a tale, which educates, entertains, and enlivens the reader. As a lover of the series, this prequel provided the background and so much more that I had speculated about over the years. The story arc provided myriad unanticipated turns, including a Dutch Island, and an unconventional pirate. If you haven't fallen in love with the Owens' Women yet, this is a perfect opportunity to jump in before Book Four is published.

Lacks spirit and magic of “Practical magic” book!😞
“These are the lessons to be learned. Drink chamomile tea to calm the spirit. Feed a cold and starve a fever. Read as many books as you can. Always choose courage. Never watch another woman burn. Know that love is the only answer.”

I really enjoyed this book. Alice Hoffman is one of my favorite authors and I wasn’t disappointed. Loved the historical perspective and characters.

I wasn't a total fan of this book. The writing was too dry and flowery. For me there was no real heart-wrenching action that kept me on the edge of my seat. I did, however, like the conclusion -- what happened to all the characters after the main events. "Rules of Magic" has been my favorite out of this trilogy.
