I love the can-do attitude of the two Munching Machines. Look at what they make out of their junkyard home!

A great robot read aloud! Two robots eat their way through a junkyard. After they have gobbled everything up, they set out to create a lovely park with its own lake, garden, playground and bike/running trails. This book would be a wonderful addition to an Earth Day program or unit on recycling or the environment. The artwork is fantastic.

CRUNCH! CLANK ! SLURP! The giant Munching Machines are at work in a messy, stinky junkyard, chowing down on rusty boxcars, dirty dump trucks, crooked airplane wings, and other discarded items. Soon the Machines have cleared the yard of garbage, and as they set to work planting trees and building a playground, the colours in the cheerfully cluttered illustrations transform from dingy grays and browns to bright, natural tones. With its unfussy rhymes, noisy machines, and upbeat story, Junkyard is a fantastic, high-energy read-aloud. February 2014 newsletter

Two robotic "Munching Machines" clean-up a junkyard in Austin's rhyming picture book. There's a lot of great vocabulary here for little ears like "slurp" and "meandering," plus the subject leads to discussion of recycling and upcycling.
