A great fantasy story with action and suspense. It closely resembles other great adventure fantasy stories but with a more realistic plot. I will be looking for the sequel.

This story begins a generation after a heroic adventure that we learn wasn't finished and will continue. Some parts of it reminded me of the film The Village. Jobin develops the plot gradually and uses lack of detail effectively to illicit fear, but the overreaction of Edmund's father to his books and the abusive treatment of Tom by his master are not believable even as a portrayal of ignorant peasants. These kids seem very grown up for their age but this is generally the case for teen fiction.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, a dark fantasy with a good dose of gritty feudal realism. Often fantasy stories for young readers feel sketchy and simplified in an effort to keep them short and accessible, but not this one. It is substantial and satisfying without being overlong, with excellent world-building, atmosphere, and characters. Not at all formulaic or cliched, either. A must for fans of the Ranger's Apprentice and Last Apprentice series and for anyone looking for a good story. 4.5 stars.
