We live in the age of Computer Business Systems (CBSs)?the highly complex, computer-intensive management programs on which large organizations increasingly rely. In Mindless, Simon Head argues that these systems have come to trump human expertise, dictating the goals and strategies of a wide array of businesses, and de-skilling the jobs of middle class workers in the process. CBSs are especially dysfunctional, Head argues, when they apply their disembodied expertise to transactions between humans, as in health care, education, customer relations, and human resources management. This book is such a load of crap, it buggers belief! Yes, Simon Head does write truthfully about the abominable practices at Walmart and Amazon, but virtually everything else is of a misdirectional nature. The two facts which completely demolish his book: (1) Jack Welch, while CEO of GE, led the way in the early and mid-1980s in the offshoring of engineering, programmer, scientific researcher R&D jobs along with the usual manufacturing and technician jobs, followed by many other companies, and (2) as of 1999, the USA became a net IMPORTER, not exporter, but NET IMPORTER, of tech services. Nothing further need be said (excepting that a bunch of books proclaiming jobs offshoring of no economical effect, claiming it is all due to computers, has been published over the past two years by either hedge fund-owned companies and/or Perseus Books - - now why should that ever be?).
