Ted Kerasote met and adopted Merle, a Laborador mix, while he was on a camping trip. Merle had been living in the wild, and after taking the dog home with him to Wyoming, Kerasote soon realized that Merle could not adjust to inhabiting exclusively in the human world. So he put a door in his house to let Merle live both outside and in.A deeply touching portrait of a remarkable animal, Merle's Door explores the issues that all animals and their human companions face as their lives intertwine, and presents the latest research into animal behavior as well as the origins and evolution of human-dog interaction. Merle showed Kerasote how dogs might live were they free; Kerasote suggests how they should be allowed to live, and the doors that should always remain open to them.

Love animal stories but the reader drove me nuts with his interpretation, despite liking his read of other books. Author has great suggestions, ideas, tips for dog lovers. I can relate to the take on (forgot the term) making animals human in looks, barks, etc. Parting with an animal companion is well written & spot on.

A "must read" for anyone who has a dog, who has ever owned a dog, or who is considering getting a dog. Superbly written. I love this book. I love this dog. You will learn to love your dog even more whether the dog of your dreams is with you or not. A promise.

DITTO to all of the comments! I absolutely loved this book. All dog owners should read it! Ted really has a deep understanding of how dogs think.

I loved this book. Listened to it as an audiobook and could not put it away. A must read for those who have loved a dog and have had the honour and privilege of having their pet love them back. Merle runs his own life and the lessons he teaches us can only be accomplished off leash. A wonderful read. Keep a box of tissues handy.

It may be a bit boring in parts, but has some very interesting observations about living with a dog. The story of Merle is well told and at the end - make sure you have kleenex.

I have to check this audio book out for the second time. The first time I must of listened to it seven times!
I makes you laugh, tears well up in some spots....but it's all intersting. And YES the narrator is excellent!
Even if your not a dog lover, you'll be entertained by this novel.

I couldn't agree more with the other reviewer here, cbarnes. I'd like to add though, when done listening/reading this book go to Kerasotes website and view, "Merle's Life" in photos. Try to not to let the water rise to your eyes...poignant...beautiful and full of life.

I highly recommend this audio book. I loved it. The narrator did an excellent job expressing the emotions, making the story enjoyable and even making the science parts interesting.
