George Washington Mars has had one passion since childhood, weapons - rifles and hand guns - and over the years has made some of the most beautiful customised rifles ever seen. He lives in the town of Pueblo Juarez where, a year ago, a freighter shot and killed Jorge Espanol in a gunfight. When Jorge's brother Hernando is wounded trying to avenge his death, George makes him a revolver that fires when it's on half cock, saving the time it takes to pull back the hammer before firing and giving Hernando the upper hand. Not long after, the gun is stolen from George's shop. Mars has engraved his name on it but, as the weapon passes from one hand to another, his identity becomes as much of a mystery as why possession of it skews the odds in any gun duel.
