The Road Shows series has accomplished what Sonny Rollins has wanted for most of his career: a recorded-music experience that is the next best thing to hearing him live. Volume 3 could be subtitled 21st Century Sonny as it spans the years 2001 through 2012, providing an overview of the music and musicians that have engaged Rollins in the new millennium. It consists of six tracks recorded in the U.S., Japan, and France, and includes the debut recording of a new Rollins composition, Pantanjali.

With as many recordings as Sonny Rollins has released over seven decades, there are bound to be a few duds. Even though the performances on this set span eleven years (2001-2012), they mostly have a lifeless, easy-listening vibe that doesn't work for me. The 15 minute long "Someday I'll Find You" illustrates this with a largely staccato Bobby Broom solo backed by Cranshaw's plodding cocktail lounge electric bass, plus totally out-of-place chimes thrown in by Kimati Dinizulu. The audiences sure seemed to enjoy it, though, and "Patanjali" picks things up a bit.
