My Young Lad (age 6) really enjoyed this book. The illustrations have lots to look at and talk about, and he really enjoyed the activity sheet at the back, especially the seek-and-find. The story is lovely and simple. It tells of the changes that happen around an oak tree during the 200 or so years of its life.

I've read quite a few reviews and comments from people unhappy with the way the author describes the Native American boy growing up and moving away, but I think that this amount of detail of the historical events is just right for the age group the book is directed at, especially considering the sparse narrative. Parents or teachers can explain further why the boy moved away, and where he likely moved to.

It's unusual to find a children's book with an unhappy ending (spoiler alert: the tree dies in the end). Not sure that the young children that usually are the audience for picture books will fully grasp the centuries-long timeline. Still, lovely illustrations and a charming idea.
