Containing a love story both harrowing and tender, “Sublime” perfectly captures the spirit of first, youthful love with all its uncertainty, intensity, passion and danger. We find ourselves rooting for these young lovers even as we quiver at the certainty of the tragic end to their affair.

Both Lucy and Colin fumble with working out the parameters of their “relationship” and we get the insights of those closest to them who both understand and fail to grasp the depths of their feelings towards each other. Lucy struggles to understand just why and how she’s in the world again; even if we figure out her true motivations before she does, it’s still a nail-biting journey.

The authors prove to be skilled adepts with language; the lyricism and eldritch nature of their prose manages to portray the indescribable so that the images almost leap off the page. The thrill of the winter scenes, of Colin’s near-brushes with death, are as palpable as the perilous love story that lies at the core of this novel.

This is a well written story about a very disturbing subject matter. I'm not sure how I feel about the book and I have a problem recommending it on that alone. On the other hand I'm still thinking about it when I usually just move on. I reread the last couple of chapter to see if I could come to a different conclusion, but no. I don't think there is a happy ending. It's abrupt and unsatisfying and it made me very unhappy.
