Being a princess isn't all that.... You've heard the fairytale: a glass slipper, Prince Charming, happily ever after... ???? Welcome to reality: royal genealogy lessons, needlepoint, acting like "a proper lady," and -- worst of all -- a prince who is not the least bit interesting, and certainly not charming. ???? As soon-to-be princess Ella deals with her newfound status, she comes to realize she is not "your majesty" material. But breaking off a royal engagement is no easy feat, especially when you're crushing on another boy in the palace.... For Ella to escape, it will take intelligence, determination, and spunk -- and no ladylike behavior allowed.

Margaret Peterson Haddix is one of my favourite authors, and this has been another wonderful story by her. I've been wanting to read this for some time, wondering how this author, who usually writes science fiction, was going to pull off a fantasy. It was excellent! Ella was a brave and interesting character (still kind, but not fragile) whom I loved from the start, and the spin on the classic fairy tale was perfect! Some things were predictable though: (spoiler alert!) from the first time Jed knocked, I already knew they'd end up together!
Overall it was a perfect retelling, and I look forward to reading Palace of Mirrors and Palace of Lies!

What if Cinderella didn't want the Happily Ever After?

Its a good book. I like how the main character will give up what everybody else in the world wants just because she knows its not the position that she would love to be in. It sends a good message!

Good book! I found myself face palming because of Prince Charming....I love Ella's daring nature and how nothing could stop her.

I discovered Margaret Peterson Haddix about ten years ago and would consider her one of the best YA authors out there. "Just Ella" takes the Cinderella story and addresses what happens AFTER the ball. She is now living in the castle training to be a princess. She discovers a world she didn't know existed and doesn't like. People are trying to turn her into someone else, there are stories going around about how she got the ball, and the handsome prince is boring. She wants out, but they are not going to let her go. She ends up in a dungeon with a dangerous guard. She will have to save herself! This is NOT a book for young readers. Recommended by Linda

Best Cinderella story I have read to date. This is a woman who does whatever she can to take control of her own destiny.

Just Ella is a sassy, fun, quick middle grade read. It takes all of the eye-rolling ridiculousness of the Disneyfied version of Cinderella and doses it with some slightly cynical, very entertaining snark.

This was a super-quick read (it's only 218 pages) with a refreshing heroine, and a lot of "save yourself" messages. I recommend it for young girls, but also for fans of fairytale retellings, sassy YA, and anyone tired of the Happily Ever After trope.
