This is an interesting twist on something that makes a lot of sense to me. All Aly wants to be is looked at by boys as something other than a friend. So, she changes herself from who she is into the complete opposite of herself, hoping that maybe the boys will finally notice her. She also pretends to hook up with her best friend(who is totally hating that she changed and knows its all for show), just to try and get her sort-of-crush to get jealous and go out with her.
This story seems to be saying the same thing as my friend(who is like my older brother) said to me once: "And just be yourself, no matter what. If they don't like YOU then screw 'em."
