For a brief, glorious period in the early 1700s, the Bahamas was ruled by a gang of some of the most famous pirates the seas had ever seen. Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and their associates banded together to form a pirate cooperative, culminating in a form of government in which blacks were equal citizens, the rich were imprisoned, and common sailors could veto their captain's orders. At the height of their power the gang served Britain, France, and Spain from their New World empires. The Royal Navy went from being unable to catch the pirates to being afraid to encounter them at all, and the public embraced the pirates as folk heroes.

In the early 1700's there was a sort of free-for-all economic climate in the Caribbean islands. Some might say "a de-regulator's dream environment". With little to no central government yet in place, pirates reined supreme. This is the history of 18th century organized crime, at sea. It's comprehensive, no doubt about that. One fact after another. Exact dates, names of everyone on the ship practically. That's the problem with this audio book. It's boring. The author isn't an effective story teller. Should have been an accountant instead. Unless you plan to outfit a crew and a boat to find old sunken pirate ships and need the exact date it sunk and the exact location and who and what was on board, best leave this one on the shelves. Maybe you can find a 3 CD abridged version. That might work. But the 11 CD version? Except for acute insomnia, not recommended.
