Well written, informative, and a great insight on the development of events in the Middle East in the past 20 years. I loved this book.

An excellent book, well written.
Should be required reading for people planning a career in foreign service and/or journalism.

Not long out of Stanford, Richard Engel headed to the Middle East in 1996 to work as a journalist. Now NBC's chief foreign correspondent, he draws on nearly two decades in the area to share insights into the region's past and present as he blends reportage with his personal experiences in Jerusalem, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, and other places. He's dodged bullets and been kidnapped while covering stories about area leaders, the Arab Spring, many wars, regional terrorism, and the experiences of regular people caught in the crossfire. Anyone interested in a fast-paced, intelligent account of what the Middle East is like right now should read this book.

Star, please clarify your comment. What are trying to say?

[To clarify my comments for the American Exceptionalist commenter - - mhmiller - - in Engel's earlier book he states // I wrote that I supported the invasion, believing it had the potential to be the start of a radical plan to redesign and improve the modern Middle East, . . \\ What kind of idiot believe George W. Bush & Cheney? Engel AND Hillary Rodham Clinton, that's who!]
Great! A book by Engel who has reported exactly what in the way of real content, real breaking new? This person was blown up, that group was blown up, these bunch were blown up, and . . . .
Next he'll be writing fictitious reports on the identification of so-called vagrants on the grassy knoll in Dallas on 11/22/63.
