Opinion

From Library Staff

Ada Twist is a curious second grader who sets out to solve a science mystery. A story told in rhyme, listen and learn about her experiments and problem solving. Recommended for K-2nd grade.

Like a lot of kids, Ada asks question after question -- just like a good scientist does!

How does this work? What about that? WHY??? A perfect fit for any kid who asks a lot of questions, and for parents who encourage them to explore their world.

Loved the rhyming, seemed a bit negative, but in the end the parents figured out how to channel this smart child's impulses.

Ada Twist knows the value of asking why and then taking steps to discover the answer. Great book to get kids thinking scientifically.

My daughter really enjoyed this book and my husband and I didn't tire of reading it to her, unlike some other children's books. We picked this up along with several other science minded books geared toward children. The book has beautiful illustrations, great rhyming and story, and has a great message for all children about the value of asking questions and being curious. I hope that Andrea Beatty writes more of these books, as they're are books about two of Ada's classmates (Iggy Peck, Architect and Rosie Revere, Engineer).

My daughter absolutely LOVES this book. She is a few months shy of 3, so I thought it might be a bit advanced - but she loves it nonetheless. She loves how it rhymes and she is constantly referencing the book in our daily life, ie. "Zowie! What is that smell? Is it cabbage soup?!" (she finds this hilarious). I feel like she takes away something new from the book each time we read it. And it's also perfect timing, as she has just reached the stage of asking "why?" ALL the time. I would highly recommend this book for ages 2.5 - 7. Each age group will take away something different. I also love the diversity in the characters. Can't wait to read the other Andrea Beaty books!

Her drive to be a scientist was distracted by her need to be destructive. My husband who is a scientist was pretty horrified by this book. I loved the art, the rhyming, and the idea, but I think it missed the mark.

I liked this book so much that I decided to buy it. Ada is a young Black girl who’s a born scientist—curious, questioning, and constantly experimenting. The book is written in rhyme, which makes it fun to read aloud and captures the reader’s attention. I think this book would be appreciated by kids in all grades of elementary school, including fifth graders.

Again, what I love about it is its fantastic representation (a scientist who’s young, female, and African-American, with natural hair and supportive parents) and it’s a very fun-to-read book.

Great for those kids who have an interest in scientific thinking.
Nice to have a childrens book showing it's ok to have the drive and aim to do things even if it means questioning everything along the way.
Our 4 year old loved this book.
