"The book is like a salve. I think the world feels disordered right now. The count's refinement and genteel nature are exactly what we're longing for." -- Ann Patchett

"How delightful that in an era as crude as ours this finely composed novel stretches out with old-World elegance." --The Washington Post

He can't leave his hotel. You won't want to.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Civility --a transporting novel about a man who is ordered to spend the rest of his life inside a luxury hotel.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel's doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Brimming with humor, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count's endeavor to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

"And the intrigue! . . . [ A Gentleman in Moscow ] is laced with sparkling threads (they will tie up) and tokens (they will matter): special keys, secret compartments, gold coins, vials of coveted liquid, old-fashioned pistols, duels and scars, hidden assignations (discreet and smoky), stolen passports, a ruby necklace, mysterious letters on elegant hotel stationery . . . a luscious stage set, backdrop for a downright Casablanca -like drama." -- The San Francisco Chronicle

Very entertaining book. The characters are very charming and clever. Just a fun read! But you will also learn more about the Russian Revolution and how it affected the Russian people. You may even want to do some background reading in Russian history. This is one of my favorite book club reads of 2017.

This is a delightful book. It starts out very quiet and ends with a real twist. If you want excitement, this book is not for you.

I wasn't excited about reading this book. One main character and one setting-it just didn't seem like something that would move enough to keep me occupied. I was hooked after two pages. The writing is great. The character development...well there really are only a few characters that get developed in this story and normally that would be problematic for me; but the characters that do get tended to are people I wish I knew in real life. I've never enjoyed a protagonist this much (especially not one who is so damn perfect in his behavior).

Definitely one of the best books of 2017, a must read. Wonderfully woven historical fiction that will capture and intrigue you. And if it slowes down here and there, rest assured that the ending will keep you up all night!

This story is a great read. A welcome repose from many of the books I read that are too busy, or, which seems likely, written by a team! The Count is a man to learn from, the author's style of writing is a joy. Enjoy.

A wonderful read - great characters, interesting situations, against the background of Russian history.

Easily one of the best books I have read this year. Towles' prose is delightful to read. His writing paints the events. His characters are warm and realistic. There is more than a little suspense to his writing. I was torn by wanting to gobble up the pages and wanting to leisurely spend hours at the hotel.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It brings a refreshing sense of the manners, grace and heartfelt care for others that our society has left behind or found without value. It was a joy to read.
