Winner of Oscar - Best Foreign Language Film - Michel Piccoli is the main attraction. Nice smaller roles for Leslie Caron and Liv Ullman. Chess masters, one a Soviet exile, and the other a Soviet citizen vie for the world championship. It's a battle of psychology, along with machinations by the team managers. No need to know anything about chess as it is a film about human manipulations, love and arrogance, not chess.

Cold war era chess match where a young gun goes up against the old master. Not bad a straight drama no action. Has the feel of Day of the Jackal except more boring. not bad if you're into cold war dramas from the 70s.
