Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly reincarnating Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin's son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki, the son of a giant, a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator. From Gaiman's deft and witty prose emerges the gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to dupe others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

If I knew that the author had such an unusually pleasant voice, I would have listened to this long ago. Gaiman weaves a delightfully deadpan British nuance into these Norse tales. The result is brilliant.

An enjoyable journey through Norse mythology. Many figures are introduced and Gaiman presents them with an eye toward continuity of character across different settings and situations. Most pleasurable is listening to Gaiman read his own work on the audiobook in which he deftly sets the mood with skill and humor. Suitable for kids (maybe ages 10 and up?) and adults.

Neil Gaiman proves once again his mastery of "The Story" in this retelling of numerous Norse myths. Odin, Thor, Loki and others are brought to new life through his words. From the Norse Creation legend to Ragnarok, and many of the best stories in between. I would strongly suggest the audio version of this book, as Neil Gaiman is an excellent narrator, and it is such a rare treat to hear stories in the author's own voice.

Listen to this book - Neil Gaiman is an excellent narrator. I'm a long-time fan of the Norse myths, so was a little hesitant going into this book. I wondered how a fiction author would treat these real-life myths and whether there would be anything new to interest me. I should have known that Neil Gaiman would come through. He treated the myths respectfully and accurately, and managed to breath new life into the stories. Highly recommended.

I was only passingly familiar with Norse mythology. This set of very charming stories as retold by the author paint the Norse gods multi-dimensionally with recognizable character strengths and weaknesses. One can imagine the Norse in their long winters with little else for entertainment telling and embellishing on these and more stories.

A very entertaining collection of old Norse myths and stories well read by the author.

This author may be a great writer but listening to him is more than a chore I'm up to.
