A fractured empire. A dark magic. Only they can stop it. In the first book of this epic new fantasy trilogy, a warrior and a thief must come together to stop the forces that threaten their people.

Hope 's old life ended the night her entire village was massacred by the emperor's forces. Now, trained in secret by a master warrior, her new life is centered on only one goal: vengeance.

Red lives by the skin of his teeth and sharpness of his wit. An expert thief and a brilliant con artist, he cares for only one thing: a good time. But when the empire's soldiers start to encroach on his territory, taking down his friends with it, he may have to re-prioritize.

Together, they will take down an empire.

Start reading this daring adventure that Sam Sykes called, "Furious where it needs to be, deceptively tender where it can get away with it, adventurous all around!"

Skovron Jon's Hope and Red introduces two new titular characters whose stories merge together in the grit of an undiscovered new world. Hope is the stereotypical survivor of the annihilation of a village, set on revenge who just happened to be raised by a warrior monk. Red, on the other hand fits a different archetype: a noble by birth who was raised on the streets and leads his own ragtag group of thieves. Naturally, the paths of the two intersect and a friendship blooms with romance lurking on the horizon. The main conflict of the book also happens to be between the two main characters and a tyrant government who utilizes a military group of alchemists to do their dirty work. Throw in some sexism and discrimination against transgender people on the part of the government and we have the much overused plot of 'girl vs government': a coming of age story which features a young girl on the cusp of adulthood who finds herself sparking and leading a revolution because the status quo is no longer acceptable. Despite all this, Hope and Red managed to keep me engaged for most of the book by taking these well know modern archetypes and stereotypes and doing something wholly comic and refreshing. A good read for the average reader.

Really good character-driven fantasy, and that ending! Bring on book two! Really liked the contrast between the characters Hope and Red although I would have liked their story lines to have met up sooner than they did.
