"A shock on every other page." --Wall Street Journal

How far would you go to find The One?

A simple DNA test is all it takes. Just a quick mouth swab and soon you'll be matched with your perfect partner--the one you're genetically made for.

That's the promise made by Match Your DNA. A decade ago, the company announced that they had found the gene that pairs each of us with our soul mate. Since then, millions of people around the world have been matched. But the discovery has its downsides: test results have led to the breakup of countless relationships and upended the traditional ideas of dating, romance and love.

Now five very different people have received the notification that they've been "Matched." They're each about to meet their one true love. But "happily ever after" isn't guaranteed for everyone. Because even soul mates have secrets. And some are more shocking than others...

A word-of-mouth hit in the United Kingdom, The One is a fascinating novel that shows how even the simplest discoveries can have complicated consequences.

I loved this twisty novel and wanted more, more, more! How thrilled was I to discover that it is going to be a Netflix show on March 12th!
This world has tremendous potential. I can't stop thinking about it.
How would the Chinese and the Indians treat an innovation like this with their cultural bias toward males? This would really flip things around!
The idea that prejudice would develop against UnMatched...
A culture developing amongst the UnMatched...
The age gap complexities of multigenerational matches...
How would this effect evolution when a significant number of children are born of matched parents?
Sooooo much potential here. I hope the writer considers writing more within the world he created.

I think the premise of this book, that there can be a biological DNA matching system to find your true love is far fetched. Maybe you could find a DNA match for someone you could "fall in love with" based on chemical reactions. But that is not love, that just physical attraction, only one element of love. But to say that there is ONLY ONE right match for you among the billions in the world is preposterous.
The concept in this book was used to create the Netflix series The ONE. It is rather losely based. The stories in the book and the stories in the series are really different.
The book was interesting enough, but also rather depressing.

Oh My Goodness! This book!!! I loved the cliff hanger chapters. I ate this book up. I'm a person who loves twists and this book had that. Even better though is fact that many of the twists you didn't see coming... Are all John Marrs books like this?! i think i'll have to find out! great book.
***Top pick for 2020***

I really enjoyed this book. It took a unique approach to exploring the concept of whether everyone has that one person who is fated to be their soulmate. Each relationship explored was vastly different than the last, and each one had its own unique twist. I couldn't put it down!

I really enjoyed this book. Very thought provoking and explored a lot of different options. I kept wanting to skip through to find out what happened with my favourite story lines!

reading 'the one' brought to mind the children's rhyme, 'this little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home...' as the format cycles through several characters and their respective story lines. the premise was a fun one, a life partner matching service based on a newly discovered gene, but the writing lacked plausibility. for example, michael crichton graduated from harvard medical school, and robin cook was also a physician.
after many twists and turns, this amusement park ride was close to careening out of control but managed to stop without losing any cars. some of the passengers don't make it, however.

“One simple mouth swab is all it takes. A quick DNA test to find your perfect partner – the one you’re genetically made for.”

This book was totally addictive! I found myself completely intrigued and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next to each of the people who had submitted their DNA! There was a bit of a large cast of characters but I never got confused, and the storylines didn't come together at the end, as so often happens. I loved how clever The One was.

As I read, I found myself wondering why some people ARE instantly attracted to each other, sometimes it's one-sided, and sometimes there is no attraction at all. Wouldn't life be easier if the one actually existed, just waiting to be found?? Imagine my surprise when I Googled "matching people by their DNA" and found it currently exists, although they don't match a person to his or her one perfect match.

I loved this book and it gave me a lot to think about!!

This book is absolutely fantastic. It feels like you're reading your new favorite episode of Black Mirror. The One might very well be one of my favorite books of all time. A quick read because you won't put it down. Delightfully unpredictable.

Content warning: some violence against women.

The book is gives you so much suspense of each of the character's perspective. I could not put the book down and wanted to know more and more of what happens next.
I loved each character in the book. Highly recommend it.
