The she meets Cielo—and everything changes. A strega who can effortlessly swap back and forth between female and male, human and animal, Cielo shows Teodora what her life could be like if she masters the power she's been keeping secret. And not a moment too soon: the ruler of Vinalia has poisoned the patriarchs of the country's five controlling families, including Teodora's father, and demands that each family send a son to the palace. If she wants to save her family, Teodora must travel to the capital—not disguised as a boy, but transformed into one. But the road to the capital, and to bridling her powers, is full of enemies and complications, including the one she least expects: falling in love.

I would have loved to read this book when I was coming out as a teen, but I appreciate the place it holds in the world even more now that I'm an older reader. There's magic, kingdoms, gender-fluidity, and a strong plot-driven storyline. The (queer) romance captures the immediate intensity of a first love and will take you back to your first relationship -- or you'll fall in love with the love interest. I usually have a hard time with fantasty *cheesiness,* but this one really sucked me in when the plot got going. Don't pass this up just because you think you're too old for a teen book. (You're not!)

Action-packed and full of intrigue, The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta is an Italian-inspired fantasy that blends magic and politics along and adds in some gender fluid characters.
