"Two candidates are vying to become Chancellor of Germany. One is a patriot having served for the past sixteen years, the other a usurper, stoking the flames of nationalistic hate. Both harbor secrets, but only one knows the truth about the other. They are on a collision course, all turning on the events of one fateful day - April 30, 1945 - and what happened deep beneath Berlin in the Fürherbunker. Did Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun die there? Did Martin Bormann, Hitler's close confidant, manage to escape? And, even more important, where did billions in Nazi wealth disappear to in the waning days of World War II? The answers to these questions will determine who becomes the next Chancellor of Germany. From the mysterious Chilean lake district, to the dangerous mesas of South Africa, and finally into the secret vaults of Switzerland, former-Justice Department agent Cotton Malone discovers the truth about the fates of Hitler, Braun, and Bormann. Revelations that could not only transform Europe, but finally expose a mystery known as the Kaiser's web."--Provided by publisher.

I had a hard time with this book. Author took too much liberty with the Characters. Insignia (pin) on the cover was used by the 5th SS "Wiking" Panzer Division and the 11th SS "Nordland" Panzer Grenadier Division.

THE KAISER'S WEB is another first-rate Cotton Malone & Cassiopeia Vitt novel by Steve Berry. Great story reaching back to the end of World War II and coming forward into modern times. The focus is on two candidates to become Chancellor of Germany, and suspicion about their links to past Nazi activities. The story is well told, interesting, and hard to put down. That said, we learn some things about how German politics work as the story unfolds, and what political and cultural shifts are happening in Europe that impact elections. In a very subtle way, this story also reflects some cultural and political shifts the USA has experienced over the last decade. Hopefully, this novel is not prescient.

For his 16th Cotton Malone novel, Steve Berry starts off in Belarus, goes to Poland and then spends much of the rest of the book traveling around Germany, Chile and South Africa. It is a whirlwind of action, and as always Berry does it as well as anyone in history/thriller genre.

I had an advanced reading copy of The Kaiser's Web. Once again Cotton Malone keeps readers glued to the page. Between the twisting plot and added historical elements, Steve Berry is a master at his craft. You can register for a virtual evening with Steve Berry on the DCL.org under the authors and events tab. It will be at 6:30pm, February 25, 2021.
