This book finally helped me tap into why I loved books with magic in them growing up and still do. It was never about wanting the magic to be real. It was about having the power to fight back and protect. The main character, Rue, finds out she's half-god, half-human, shortly after her mother is killed and she's taken away from her younger sister. She gets transported into a whole new world where she has to learn a new language, a new culture, and new magical abilities. She goes back a year later to check on her sister, but when she finds out her sister's and her community's lives are in danger, she does everything in her power and influence to figure out how to protect them. The book seamlessly explores racism, discrimination, white supremacy, police brutality, and slavery through a magical fantasy lens in the book. It blew me out of the water how good this book was, and I can't wait for the second book in the series.
