A wild and wacky tale of a llama who brings about the end of the world through consumption of cake. Each day of the week something different happens...until the end of the world! Filled to the brim with bright and bold illustrations, this picture book is full of laughs.
What happens when a llama eats a cake? Well, in this funny twist on the butterfly effect, it means the end of the world. Stutzman effectively builds up to the end times by summarizing the actions of llama throughout the week. The quirky creature has no clue that the black hole forming from its ripped dancing pants could be so dangerous. Or not quite so dangerous. For true to the random nature of the humour, events don't play out quite as one would expect. Along with Fox's adorably silly cartoon illustrations, Stutzman is point on. Each word and image is carefully chosen and placed to maximize the laughs. A bright future awaits this author, illustrator combination, even if their llama happens to "destroy" the world again.
Llama spelled backwards is Amall. As we all know this is the name of an ancient Toltec god also known as the great devourer. Nostradamus predicted that Amall would become enraged after eating a disappointing lemon meringue pie and would then destroy the universe in order to punish the chef who produced the offensive pie.
Llama Destroys the World is clearly derivative of the Amall legend. Instead of lemon meringue it begins with cake. Instead of rage there are a pair of pants that get torn and somehow tear a hole in space-time.
Clearly Stutzman is a prophet of Amall notifying us that our time is near.
And if not, your second grader will probably really like this book.
Llama loves cake! And dancing! Unfortunately, these two things cause the end of the world. Something could maybe have been done to save those turtles in top hats and their tea cups if only Llama didn't also love bologna sandwiches with way too much cheese and also painting. This is a very silly and adorably illustrated picture book. The cake illustrations will appeal, as will Llama saying "Dat!" instead of "That!"
