Young Moncho enters primary school, gets a wonderful teacher, and learns about nature, love and passion. Unfortunately, Spain’s Republic was in the process of being overthrown by the fascists and we get a taste of the fear in the hearts of both the fascists and the democrats. While the ending of the film is horrendous, it is just the terrible beginning of the loss of liberty of the Spanish people for the next 30 to 40 years. This is what happens to a country that believes an authoritarian figure when he claims that he alone can fix the nation’s problems

A beautiful movie set in North West Spain (Galicia) just before and at the start of the Spanish Civil War in an area pro-nationalist (i.e. against the Republicans). Great acting. The main child is outstanding. It demonstrates the divisions created between friends, families and others in order to survive and how complicated was that civil war. One needs to understand a little about that war to be able to fully comprehend the movie (especially the later parts). If not it is still a great and touching movie.
I also wish that the librarian categorize this movie as Spanish Civil War to improve the search.

It doesn't matter what country you're in, kids will always be loud and ungrateful. This teacher took the time to help one of his students only to have him turn on him in the end. The father did the same thing just to save his own skin, and all those who lived there chanted as these men were led away. It was disappointing to know that from the beautiful explanation of nature, people could be so barbaric.
