Good – Longshots (2008) 94 min. This is based on a true story of Jasmine Plummer who, at the age of eleven, became the first female to play in the U.S. Pop Warner football tournament in its 56-year history. The charm from this film is in the actors themselves and the wonderful story of finding one’s way. Keke Palmer [who was 15 years old at the time] plays Jasmine and gives a wonderful sincere performance – you can’t help but feel emotionally attached to this character. Ice Cube, who starred in the dismal “Are We Done Yet? (2007)” a year earlier, shines in this film as a sympathetic unemployed factory worker, who’s football dreams were cut short after an accident. The film works on many levels as a drama and as a sports movie. It’s wonderful to note in this story how God guides those that seem lost onto a path that will ultimately provide them fulfilment through others.
