I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid is a psychological thriller narrated by a young woman having many doubts about her relationship, but nonetheless, going to meet her boyfriend Jake’s parents. Throughout the course of the novel, we are able to learn more about the woman, Jake himself, and what happens on and after their lengthy road trip. Something I really liked about this book was how up for interpretation it was. The entire story is full of ambiguity, allowing the reader to think about what is occurring, why, how, etc., while still following the interesting and captivating plot. Personally, what makes a good book (to me) is one that makes you think, and Reid’s novel does exactly that. My only criticism of I’m Thinking of Ending Things is that the ambiguity of the novel may make it a more challenging read. It is truly a very interesting novel, yet without watching the film first, it may be difficult to understand what is going on. Personally, had I not watched the film before, it could have been very challenging to fully realize what was happening as I was reading. Overall, I would still rate the book a 4/5 stars! It is a great read and a challenge all in one. @readingmouse of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
