J.C. Nichols occupies a complicated place in Kansas City's history. He was a real estate magnate who developed some of Kansas City's most beautiful neighborhoods and contributed heavily to local museums and landmarks. Nichols is also responsible for "redlining" and residential covenants that kept Blacks, Jews, and other marginalized people from purchasing homes and living in the more desirable areas of Kansas City.
