In Radio Silence we follow 17 year old Frances Janvier from the end of year 12 until the summer after year 13 while she gets the opportunity to make the artwork for her favourite podcast Universe City. Turns out Aled Last, the quietest boy she knows who also lives across the street from her, is the creator of Universe City and online goes by the name of Radio Silence. The pair quickly become friends over the summer but when the world finds out that Aled is Radio Frances worries what will happen to their friendship, and whether she’ll have the courage to continue breaking out of her shell. Frances was an incredible protagonist to read from because I relate to her so much in respect to the immense pressure she feels from school and the expectation to go to a good university. It was inspiring and eye opening to read about Frances’ journey to learning who she really is when she isn’t putting up a front. For any high school or postsecondary student struggling with the expectations placed on them from school this is a book for you, and this book also has some amazing, diverse relationships which were incredibly refreshing to read about. “And yeah, it was all in my head, probably. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t real.” 4/5 stars - Hailey, 16, SAPL Read It & Review Contributor
