I am not sure I would have finished this novel if I had not been listening to it on audio -- what astoundingly self-absorbed and awful characters! Sure, that's partially the point; it's also not very fun to read.

Completely charming -- a wonderful sense of chemistry between the leads, lots and lots of family history, and a great ending.

Brutal and honest. I felt Klay was at his best in the first story, "Redeployment," for which the book is named.

A much smoother Jack White than I remember from GHOSTMAN -- but nevertheless, a fast-paced and thrilling high-stakes caper that is enjoyable from start to finish.

Fast-paced and interesting look at the White House in a time of crisis, both personally for our main characters and as a nation. Old hurts and rivalries, friendships and relationships, and professional desires rise to the top on the day the White House has agreed to let a film crew follow key staffers, including the president (who just happens to be female) -- the same day a series of coordinated attacks on the US are launched. Much less about politics than about the people involved.Fast-paced and interesting look at the White House in a time of crisis, both personally for our main characters and as a nation. The Swing! The Swing!, BookLose the Fat and Get Fit With This Revolutionary Kettlebell Program

The book could, in reality, be a pamphlet -- there's a lot about Reifkind's own journey and relatively little about the kettlebell technique. But beginners will appreciate her detailed instructions and cheerful attitude.

Compelling, though brutal, police procedural set in 1950s South Africa. Excellent narration by Saul Reichlin on the Recorded Books version.

I think ANNIHILATION benefits from being listened to: the quiet, almost emotionless tone of the book is eerie and striking in its delivery by narrator Carolyn McCormick, as if you are listening to the biologist tell her own tale in a trance, dumbstruck by what she has learned and experienced. Lacks the wonderful cleverness that made her first, RECONSTRUCTING AMELIA, a page-turner of a psychological thriller, but is nevertheless a solid and enjoyable mystery.

You might pick up this book thinking it is a post-apocalyptic novel about two sisters living in the woods following the collapse of society and how they survive -- but, surely, viewed that way, you will be disappointed. Instead, this book is really a mediation on loneliness, what survival means, self-sufficiency, and what from modern society we would take, if we could, while discarding the rest. You may not agree with the choices Nell and Eva make, but you will certainly think about how you might be prepared if everything you felt was important was lost in an instant. You might pick up this book thinking it is a post-apocalyptic novel about two sisters living in the woods following the collapse of society and how they survive -- but, surely, viewed that way, you will be disappointed. Absolutely, completely enjoyable. If you remember when BRIDGET JONES came out, and how fresh and lively it felt, and have since been disappointed by the triteness of "chick lit," you will love THE ROYAL WE, which has the same feeling of fun, and honesty, and freshness, wrapped up in a lovely little love story. Sharon Bolton is a long-time favorite of mine, due to the twisty stories and fantastic (and damaged) characters that accompany her smart mysteries. LITTLE BLACK LIES is no exception; the story highlights three characters, each saddled with secrets and grief, as their community wrestles with the disappearance of two children. As each character shares their story, the mystery deepens. Some things are better when they are read in small doses -- like Thug Kitchen's blog/Tumblr. The trappings of their persona, with the constant swearing and the "you stupid meat eater" tone get *really* tired in book form, and detract from the recipes.
