An absolutely stunning companion to LIFE AFTER LIFE, focusing on the story of Teddy Todd. I would have thought it impossible to love him more than I did, but A GOD IN RUINS is so full of the smallest and most beautiful details about Teddy that I sometimes had to put the book down and take a moment. An almost perfect book.An absolutely stunning companion to LIFE AFTER LIFE, focusing on the story of Teddy Todd. An absolutely terrific entry into the Maisie Dobbs series, this time featuring an unusual setting in Gibraltar at the time of the Spanish Civil War as well as a tender and nuanced look into the inner life of our heroine. Heartbreaking and intriguing.

Quiet... and incredibly creepy. Imagine if Major Pettigrew wasn't a nice fellow, but instead a clever, secretive man with a key to your house. A great read.

ZERO TO ONE can either be a quick read or a deep dive, I suspect, depending on how much you need someone else to elaborate for you on the central idea that we should strive to create the new rather than improve on the old. Personally, I think Jim Collins' GOOD TO GREAT explored that concept better. That being said, Thiel's dig at the LEAN STARTUP principles, encouraging us to risk boldness, have a plan (rather than iterate), find new markets and emphasize sales and product design are thought-provoking ways to think about how to create the thing no one knew they wanted.ZERO TO ONE can either be a quick read or a deep dive, I suspect, depending on how much you need someone else to elaborate for you on the central idea that we should strive to create the new rather than improve on the old. The psychological thriller at its quiet best: eerie and uncomfortable, with the spaces inbetween providing the fear. Our main character, Rachel, is a most unusual unreliable narrator: her life has been falling aparat for the past three years, and she has turned to drink, and therefore cannot remember what she said, did, or saw.
You may have seen this book compared to GONE GIRL, and I suppose its unflattering picture of the realities of a marriage may make that true. I think a better readalike is SJ Watson's BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, because the truly frightening element of this story is the not-knowing.The psychological thriller at its quiet best: eerie and uncomfortable, with the spaces inbetween providing the fear. Interesting look at what foods we should eat and how we should exercise -- including a look at how broken the food pyramid is. Now to see if following the ideas within actually work... the science suggests it should!

A perfect read for fans of GONE GIRL who appreciated the excellent tension provided by a truly unreliable narrator -- and for fans of Ruth Wilson's character of Alice on the BBC show LUTHER. A delicious psychological thriller for readers who don't need their characters to be likable or rational.A perfect read for fans of GONE GIRL who appreciated the excellent tension provided by a truly unreliable narrator -- and for fans of Ruth Wilson's character of Alice on the BBC show LUTHER. Hilarious, and spot on. If only Barrett had also talked about how composting and recycling is compulsory in Portland, so much so that when you travel, you bring your recycling back with you, because you cannot bear to throw it away, it might have been perfection. Lacks the brilliant pacing of Watson's first, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, which unfortunately makes the first half a fairly pedestrian thriller. When the plot and the pace pick up, though, it's a worthy read, with the events made even more interesting by the reader's apathy for the main character, Julia. Watson is still very much an author to keep an eye on.Lacks the brilliant pacing of Watson's first, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, which unfortunately makes the first half a fairly pedestrian thriller. A thriller that manages to be intriguing and yet slower in pace; while the beginning of the book suffers a bit from taking too long to start to tie the pieces (and the characters) together, the end more than makes up for it.

Pretty much the only negative with this show is the horrible opening credits. Everything else is a combination of superb acting, excellent storytelling, and fabulous (and awful) 80s fashions.

While HUSH HUSH features an interesting mystery and heartbreaking incident at the heart of the story (what is the actual reason Melisandre Dawes, cleared of killing her youngest child due to postpartum psychosis, back in Baltimore after a decade away?), the real story of the novel is the home life of private investigator and long-time series lead Tess Monaghan. While HUSH HUSH features an interesting mystery and heartbreaking incident at the heart of the story (what is the actual reason Melisandre Dawes, cleared of killing her youngest child due to postpartum psychosis, back in Baltimore after a decade…
