Really good translation. I was surprised at the end--and I'm almost never surprised.

I would have given this five stars if Dodd hadn't put in the totally ridiculous "romance" at the end. That, and a broken heart, absolutely ruined the book. Otherwise it was a new story--not a copy of some other work, not a classic Christie story, just a new story line with excellent characters. (The rich Asian Dragon-lady was right on the edge of racist, but the character served a purpose.) It was pretty tense throughout, and the characters grow and change over the ten-year span. The complicated mother-daughter relationship pushed the limits of possible, but so do many real mother-daughter relationships. Absolutely worth reading.I would have given this five stars if Dodd hadn't put in the totally ridiculous "romance" at the end. That, and a broken heart, absolutely ruined the book. Light, fun, quick read that takes us on a roller coaster ride. Quirky characters (don't you love middle-age women making life work?) who truly care for each other--or hate each other passionately. Like a cup of cocoa on a cold evening, this little book offers comfort along with a painless history lesson or two. I suspect the rest of the series may also, like the Hamish Macbeth series, only kill off those who deserve to die.Light, fun, quick read that takes us on a roller coaster ride. I can't believe I finished it. I hated all the characters equally. I did not find the cheer routines interesting, and the mean girl stuff was disgusting. Still, something about it kept me reading. I'm going to say it is an age thing and suggest you find out for yourself if you want a return trip to high school.I can't believe I finished it. I hated all the characters equally. Sets and costumes are wonderful. Acting is passable. No subtitles, so your on your own with the slang and them talking while sobbing, eating, or drinking. Probably better if you are a fan of the books.

Another great 3-hour read featuring horrid relatives, backstabbing "Friends," and an unsolvable murder. Of course, Mona solves it. Lord Robert is called away to save the family estate in England, and Mona fears she will lose him for good this time. It would be worth your time to read this book just for the dirt Mona digs up on the seemingly perfect lawyer. Shocking! Great fun, but read in order to get the full effect.Another great 3-hour read featuring horrid relatives, backstabbing "Friends," and an unsolvable murder. Of course, Mona solves it. Parallel timeline to the events of The Last Colony--and a must read if you want answers to all the questions left unanswered (or as Scalzi claims answers misunderstood). Werewolves? Nice explanation. Sapper field? Oh, that makes sense. This is one time that you really do need to read the Acknowledgements at the back of the book--especially if you like the "vanity cards" at the end of a Chuck Lorre TV show. It's hard not to love a smart-mouth kid like Zoe, who could give snark lessons to the best of us. How can anyone not love this series? Three hours to read each book, and each book is sweet, with a good mystery (not some ridiculous twist at the end) a standard poodle, a British Lord (8th in line for the throne no less) in love with her, and an inheritance of about a bazillion dollars in 1930 era. Oh, an an evil aunt and a whole community full of enemies. Read them in order, but do read them. Ages 11 to 90.How can anyone not love this series? Very cute lead characters in a wacky town full of nasty people as weirdos. Not laugh-out-loud funny like Darynda Jones or Janet Evanovich, but but I did find myself grinning every few pages. A light, quick read, but with too much recapping.

I just read The Lantern Men (Ruth Galloway, #12), and spent most of the book wanting to slap some sense into Ruth. I was really glad that Harbinder was a fresh character with totally different issues. Most of the book is narrated in first person, so it is a bit jarring when a few paragraphs have to be told in past tense. There were several passages that made me stop and think, and there were a few events that made me flip back a few pages to clarify the "facts," so a bit more work that a quick read or a light read, but totally worth it. I wouldn't classify this is a page turner or a can't put it down, but it the same high quality as the Ruth series as far as plot and character development. There is a bit more mystery and no archeology, in case you want to be warned. The two gay and one fluid character do make demands on the reader--to judge or not to judge--and show how not very far we have come: from men going to jail for being gay a decade ago to women still afraid to tell her parents she isn't gong to be bringing home a man.I just read The Lantern Men (Ruth Galloway, #12), and spent most of the book wanting to slap some sense into Ruth. These are such a joy to read. Light, cozy (ish) mystery. The death may be gory, but it the reader doesn't actually get the details. The story glides along with murder intrigue, duplicity, nasty relatives, romance ( with no gory details here either) and some painless history lessons along the way.
